In an attempt to make it easier to find the active topics I came up with a new page at http://www.handloads.com/forum/active.asp. This page will let you specifiy how many days back you want to look for active threads - up to a maximum of 14 days. You can set this either by editing the URL directly or by using the drop down list on the page.

I hope you find this usefull.

Just saw this. It is interesting and looks to be useful.

Seems to be working so far, a couple things I'm looking to add are having it show active posts since the last time you logged in and breaking up the threads by topic instead of just running them all together. The first task shouldn't be to bad, not sure about the second one though.

"Since you last logged in" would be a nice feature. Any chance you can flag the threads like some other sites do?

Ok, there is now an option in the drop down to show anything since the last time you logged in.

I'm not sure what you mean by flag the threads, so I don't know if I can add that feature or not. Point me to an example and I'll see if I can do it.

Example, take a look at the Ruger forum. When you go into a category and look at the threads, the little file folder on the left will be pink colored if there are new messages since your last time on. I think Sixgunner.com puts a little envelope on the folder.

Also, the icon on the category changes if there are new messages in a thread within that category. Ruger uses a light bulb that is light when new messages exist and out when there are no new messages.

Does that explain it?

Ok, I see that on the Sixgunner site - I've never noticed it before. That might be possible now since some of the work has already been done for the active.asp page.

I haven't gotten to updating the main page to show when there are new pages in a given topic yet, but I did update the active.asp page so that it shows the forum that a post is in along with the thread name.

I made a couple other changes to active.asp and showtopic.asp that should speed up the load time of those pages a little.

If I might make a suggestion: On your main page, under the forums section, add the following link.

http://www.handloads.com/forum/active.asp?days=LastActive

I have found this to be most convenient and have book marked it. By putting it on the front page, perhaps others will like it too.

Not a bad idea, one potential problem I see with that is it may tend to bring new people to just the latest topics so they wouldn't see the thousands of older posts. As Walt pointed out what is obvious to people who have used a given piece of software for a while isn't always easy to those who haven't.

There is a link to Active Topics on the top of each forum page as it is now, maybe someplace more prominent would be easier?

Correct me if I am wrong, a new user would get all posts when they click on my link because they hadn't been on yet. The active topics is fine where it is. I believe it goes back a couple of days. I just like mine because it gives me the topics with activity since I was on last.

Ok, I'll correct you

A new user who either doesn't have an account or isn't logged in gets the last 1 days posts by default. The "last active" flag does a check between today and whatever the last active date was. If there isn't a last active date it caused the page to hang - that was a bug. So new people, or someone not logged in who tries to get all posts since they were last active now get the posts from the last 1 day. They can still select different options from the drop down, only the "last active" option is unavailable.

Listing all posts would take forever, so even if they set it to show all posts from the last 600 days the page will only list the latest 100 posts, it's a performance issue. Beyond that the list gets to large and unwieldy anyway and it's easier to browse the individual forums for posts.
