Handloads.Com ForumSite News and UpdatesUpcoming server outage
Handloads.com is moving to a new server in the next day or so, when that happens you may not be able to access the site until the DNS servers get the new IP address sent out. That usually doesn't take long, but can take a day or two. So if you get "server not found" messages that's the cause and it will only be a short temporary situation.

Thanks.
John

Hey John, that happened to me 7/30 about 4:00 PM ET. I normally do not get excited about that, but I had completed a unusally large post (for me anyways), press save thread and poof, it was gone. Any ideas what happened?

The entire server crashed for a brief time yesterday, I don't recall exactly when, but I'd guess that was what happend. That's one of the reasons the site is moving to a different server, the one it's currently on is a bit unstable.

I have another site up on the server it's moving to and so far that one hasn't had any problems - keep your fingers crossed!

Another fine Microsoft product bites me again.

I think it's more the hardware or admins than MS products, I have a W2K machine that gets used as a terminal server for 3 uers and as a light web server that was running for 3 months without rebooting, and then it was rebooted to add another larger hard drive. My development/test W2K machine at work has currently been up for 24 days and when it was shut down last time was when I was taking a week off aroun the 4th of July.

It's not always Microsoft fault (but that's not a bad place to look first )

I had to shut my 6 Novell servers down Mondya due to a scheduled power outage at the plant. They had been up for 70+ days. That is actually an unusally short time for them to be up. Normally, they get re-started maybe once every 6 months and then not because the server has a problem but because I have to do some maintanence or the plant is down. I have seen Novell servers with run times for more than a year or two. From what I have heard, most of Microsoft OS problems are related to the OS over writing memory. Oh well, enough MS bashing for today, but tomorrow is a new day!

The switch to the new server is complete, everything seems to be running fine. Now it's just a matter of the DNS servers around the world updating with the new IP address so everyone can get back here using http://www.handloads.com.

See you soon!

Welcome back John, I cheated, I stuck an entry in my hosts file for you. Don't need no stinkin' DNS. 'Course, no one has found there way here yet.

Clever Terry, not many people today know about HOSTS, but you being a Novell admin that shouldn't be surprising . I thought about doing that, but it could mask any problems with the DNS that I would need to know about.

Hopefully the DNS will catch up soon, but it could be another day...unless there's a problem.

Hi John, I'm at work on a machine without the entry in the hosts file. DNS is still not resolving handloads.com. It is 8/2 17:40 ET
