Handloads.Com ForumGeneral DiscussionA Field Revolver
One of the visitors to the site has written up an article on what makes a great field revolver. I think you'll enjoy the read, and knowing the people here will likely agree with him.

A Field Revolver

Just a thread for comments about the article - fire at will.

Good reading,thanks!

That´s exactly what I´m missing, a short .44. I´d like it to be a magnum though.

My 2.5" S&W 66 (357 Mag) is spitting cast 158 Lee HP:s at 1310 fps (yeah I know, that´s sick lol) and my 10.5" SBH is doing 255 SWC:s at 1450, got nothing in between really.

I usually carry the SBH in the woods. I´m tall, no problem it sits nice in the shoulder holster.

Two weeks ago here was a three day "Corporate Moose Hunt", a big timber company (UPM) had quests from all over the world. A friend of mine works for them and he participated in that hunt. In addition to 17 moose that they got, they saw five brown bears, all confirmed to be different ones. So we have bears, in a serious case I´d feel better with the stout 44 Mag load after all so... a ported 454 Casull or .50 S&W may be the next one after all.

I´m one of those who have shot the flinch -and some of my hearing- out of my life long time ago.

How come this "what I´d like next..." -thing never ends lol?

Interesting about the S&W 696. Several months ago I was looking at buying a 686 and found the 696 in the S&W catalog. You couldn't find any around this area. One eventually came up for sale but got away.

Seems like it would be good gun to have. From what I saw it's only drawback is that it's limited to 5 shots.

nice article, thanks John

been looking for the S&W 696 for a while -- and hope to find one -- good gun, and a good ctg., especially for handloaders, which I am.

had a snubbie 624, and it was a darn big gun, and didn't handle magnums -- got the 629 snbbie, and it is definitely not as small, light, and 'carry-able' as a 696 -- which I now 'need' {I get confused sometimes with 'need' and 'want'}

I agree with the thank you to John. Not a lot of fluff, just good info.
I have been messing more with .357 mags lately, but the .44's still hold a special place in my little black heart.

John came real close to perfection in the field with the .44 Special, however I think the Taurus 450 is a better choice. The 450 in .45 Colt has more ability to deal with bears or two legged preditors, while still having the option to load down for plinking and varmints. The 450 is stainless steel, with a 2" ported barrel, it comes with great ribber grips, easy to use fixed sight, it's easy to carry and to shoot. This is my choice for concealed carry and for a rifle hunting companion. I usually stock it with Cor-Bon's fine 200 grain JHP at 1100fps it's ready to roll.

Good article. I would look into one of those revolvers, but I already have a S&W mountian gun in 44 mag. If I remember right it weighs 39 ounces and has a 4" barrel and a six shot cylinder.

As far as the cartridge is concerned, I rarely load my mountain gun with magnums. In town I load it with federal 44 special 210's {?} and in the hills with the 250gr Keith's at about 1000fps in a special case. right now I use 2400, but I will be trying unique soon {As soon as I can find the time to get to the loading bench and to the range} as unique should work better with the short barrel than 2400. The 44spl will do anything that I ask of it in my neck of the woods where the biggest thing we have is elk and the occasional shiras moose, and the very occasional black bear.

Nice choice -- personally, I think a .45 Colt would be as good, or even better. Standard and cowboy loads give you a mild-shooting gun, while with handloads you can make a .44 Magnum sit up and take notice.

Unique will 'work' better in the .44 Special, especially in a short bbl. -- however whatever powder gives the highest velocity in a long bbl. will also give the highest velocity in a snubbie short bbl. gun -- may be counter-intuitive, but it's true.

for some evidence or corroboration:

I noticed the Speer manual one or two editions ago tested .44 Specials in a Charter Arms bulldog 2.5 or 3 inch bbl. -- the highest velocity was with AA # 9, which is approx. equal in burn rate to 2400, and also Vihtavuori n 110, which I use -- it {any of those powders in a snubbie} may spit a lot of unburned powder, but it will give the most velocity in the short bbl. if it gave the most velocity in the long bbl. -- so for a defense load, or a field load, go with the slower powder, especially since if something which can bite needs to be convinced to look elsewhere, you will want every f.p.s. you can muster.

however such a mess is not desirable in a target or plinking load, and therefore rarely gets used short bbls. for those loads.

Good article. Couldn't find a reason to disagree with his choice. Personally, I would favor the .45 Colt because of it's versatility. Currently, my carry gun in the field is a BH in .45 Colt. It sports the 5-1/2" barrel. I'm a fairly hefty guy, and can wear this revolver all day long without the weight bothering me. Generally, I keep it loaded with a 200gr RNFP bullet with 13.3 grains of HS-6, or a 250gr with 11.6 grains. If I feel I need something stouter, I favor a 300gr bullet with 23.5 grains of H110...but it's not a load I care to plink with!

Here in Washington, a pistol/revolver must have a 4" barrel (as defined by the maker)to be able to hunt Big Game with. My Glock 36 lacks just a 1/4", I believe, to make the cutoff for this. Too bad, because I really like the .45acp for field carry; just like the .44spc, except just a tad bigger. I just bought that 5.5" SS Bisley in .41mag and I will carry that for awhile as back up in the field. If it is too bulky, tho, I will not hesitate to go back to my G36, even tho I would not be able to take a shot at deer with it. I wonder if one had a 4-4.5" barrel installed on the G36 and If it was stamped as such, if you could legally shoot big game with it....
