| Glen has done a terrific writup about the 480 Ruger and where he see's it's place in the hangun hierarchy. It's up at http://www.handloads.com/articles/480Ruger.asp for anyone who's interested (and of course you are or you wouldn't be reading this thread, right?  ).I was one who originally thought there wasn't a need for the 480 based on the factory ballistics. Now I agree with Glen, the 480 is at it's best with 400+ gr bullets at moderate velocities, a fairly unique niche. You can get more power, depending on how you want to measure it, with other calibers but in the field the 480 seems to be able to hold it's own. | |

| Excellent article. Lots of information. I have only see one SRH 480. And to be honest I was totally turned off by the tool box gray paint finish. Yes it may be durable, and it may be a good finish for hunting, but this cranky old shooter wasn't impressed. I would love to see one in regular stainless. I'd also love to shoot one, any finish, to see what it's like. Maybe that will come. I really can't comment about the load data. Only recently have I become exposed to the "heavier than normal" bullet idea, and I'm still just touching this in .45 Colt. So I guess time will tell. Hopefully some day before I die, I'll be able to leave IL and move somewhere that I can shoot on a regular basis. Then my experiments will increase. Again good article. | |

| Very good article,thanks! I wonder what my next sixgun caliber will be... heavy is good,especially in this casting frenzy. Dunno yet,another good one to consider. | |
